Phoebe the Mighty Mermaid
I think of all the beauty in the sea, all the bodies in this world, and how without different shades and shapes, Earth would be nothing but a dull stone in space.
Phoebe, a nine-year-old girl and would-be mermaid, reckons with her body image after a humiliating visit to the doctor. Her concerns about fatness seem to follow her everywhere, even to her favorite place in the world: the beach. Phoebe’s only escape is imagining herself as queen of an underwater kingdom -- moving freely across the ocean, losing herself in its biodiverse depths. Because after all the teasing and hurtful comments she has faced about her size, Phoebe feels that it's too difficult to be human. Ultimately, with the help of her family and a group of mighty mermaids, Phoebe learns to accept her body as it is -- even when it's hard.
Created by eating disorder survivors and educators interested in the interactions between art, critical literacy, and fat liberation, this book celebrates body diversity and size acceptance for both children and adults.
